Finding the right people for public service starts with helping them see the possibilities. Chautauqua County Department of Human Resources recruiter Lauren Ryan is taking that approach to recruitment, connecting with job seekers and introducing them to the many career paths available in county government.
Ryan was recently featured by NEOGOV in an episode of 'Behind the Curtain Inside NeoGov', a provider of human resources software for the public sector, in a feature highlighting how Chautauqua County is working to attract new talent and rethink public service recruitment.
Rather than focusing solely on individual job openings, Ryan encourages candidates to consider the broader range of opportunities available in county government. Chautauqua County employs professionals across a wide variety of fields, including nursing, engineering, law, information technology, social services, mental health, transportation and environmental services.
“I would like people to stop thinking of government employment as simply a government job and start thinking of it as hundreds of different careers that happen to serve the public,” Ryan said.
As part of her work, Ryan goes beyond traditional recruitment methods to build relationships with schools, community organizations, workforce partners and professionals in hard-to-fill fields. She attends career fairs, makes connections with potential applicants and, when necessary, expands recruitment efforts beyond the county and surrounding region.
Her efforts reflect the County's commitment to connecting people with meaningful career opportunities while building a workforce that can continue delivering essential services to residents.
