County Proclaims March as “Choose to Include Month”

Submitted by Justin Gould on

At the March Chautauqua County Legislature meeting, County Executive Paul M. Wendel, Jr. officially recognized March as both “Choose to Include Month” and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

The proclamation celebrates the contributions of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and encourages the community to foster inclusive opportunities for all.

The recognition underscores that the disability experience is a natural part of life and an important aspect of the county’s rich diversity. First established nationally in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month encourages Americans to provide support, encouragement, and opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities to lead full and productive lives.

“Equitable experiences and full inclusion are a matter of social justice,” the proclamation states. “Creating inclusive environments is the responsibility of everyone.” Chautauqua County emphasizes that inclusion means providing equal access to opportunities and resources for those who might otherwise be excluded, including individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities and members of other minority groups.

County Executive Wendel highlighted that individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities are treasured members of the community, and that their advocates play a vital role in expanding opportunities that enrich lives throughout the county.

Residents, organizations, and institutions are encouraged to recognize the abilities and contributions of people with disabilities and work toward a more inclusive Chautauqua County.
