Medicare Open Enrollment Is Coming Soon

Medicare’s Annual Open Enrollment Period is just around the corner. Each year, Medicare beneficiaries have an opportunity to review their health and prescription drug coverage and make changes for the upcoming year. The Annual Open Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, with changes taking effect January 1, 2027.

This is an important time to review your coverage because Medicare Advantage Plans and stand-alone Part D prescription drug plans can change their premiums, costs, benefits, provider networks, prescription drug formularies, and other coverage details from year to year. Plans may also be discontinued or no longer offered in your area. Even if your current plan is continuing, it is important to review the changes for 2027 to make sure the coverage continues to meet your needs.

The Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services (OFAS) offers the Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) through a certified program provided by the New York State Office for the Aging. HIICAP counselors can provide unbiased, individualized assistance in reviewing the Medicare coverage options available for 2027.

During an appointment, counselors can help you compare plans based on your individual needs, including prescription medications, doctors, pharmacies, costs, and coverage. Counselors can also screen individuals for other programs that may help with Medicare and prescription drug costs. These programs may include Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC), Extra Help, and the Medicare Savings Program (MSP).

Medicare plan reviews are also available for caregivers and family members who are helping a loved one with their Medicare coverage. Reviewing Medicare plans can be overwhelming, especially when assisting someone who is unable to review the information themselves. OFAS HIICAP counselors can help caregivers understand the available options and navigate the process.

Although Open Enrollment is an important time to review your Medicare coverage, OFAS encourages individuals to reach out throughout the year with Medicare and health insurance questions. Counselors can also provide information about Medicare preventive services and other benefits that may be available through your coverage. Prevention is an important part of maintaining your health, so be sure to talk with your healthcare provider about preventive services during your annual appointments.

If you need assistance with Medicare or health insurance, contact the Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services and NY Connects. You can visit one of our office locations, email CCNYC@chqgov.com, or call 716-753-4582.

Don’t wait until the last minute—review your Medicare coverage and make sure your plan continues to meet your needs for 2027.
