How to Keep Heating Costs Low Without Sacrificing Comfort

As colder months arrive, many older adults worry about rising heating costs. Staying warm is important for health and comfort, but that doesn’t mean your energy bills have to climb. With a few simple steps, you can keep your home cozy and safe while saving money this winter.

1. Seal Out Drafts- Even small gaps around doors and windows can let in cold air. Use weatherstripping or draft stoppers to seal those leaks. If you feel a chill near windows, try thermal curtains to hold in the heat. These small changes can make a big difference in comfort and energy use.

2. Set the Thermostat Smartly- Aim to keep your thermostat around 68°F (20°C) when you’re home and lower it slightly at night or when you’re away. A programmable or smart thermostat can handle these adjustments automatically. These thermostats help save money without extra effort. If you’re sensitive to the cold, dress in warm layers instead of turning up the heat.

3. Maintain Your Heating System- Have your furnace or boiler checked once a year by a professional to make sure it’s working properly, safely and efficiently. Replace or clean filters monthly during the winter. Keeping your system in good shape can prevent breakdowns and keep your energy bills lower.

4. Use the Sun’s Warmth- Open curtains on sunny days to let in natural heat, especially from south-facing windows. Close them at night to trap that warmth inside. It’s an easy, free way to make your home more comfortable.

5. Stay Warm Safely- Space heaters can help in smaller rooms, but use them carefully. When using a space heater, keep them at least three feet away from anything that can burn, and never leave them running unattended or overnight. Electric blankets and heating pads can also add warmth, but follow safety instructions closely.

6. Explore Assistance Programs- If heating costs are a concern, check for local energy assistance programs or utility company discounts for seniors. LIHEAP may offer help through the local Department of Health and Human Services when it becomes available. Another program that may be able to assist is The Neighbor for Neighbor Program through Salvation Army.

Staying Warm and Worry-Free by sealing drafts, maintaining your heating system, and making small adjustments, you can stay warm, safe, and comfortable all winter without breaking the budget. A little preparation goes a long way toward peace of mind when the temperatures drop.
