Boil Water Order Lifted for Fredonia Village Water Customers, Conserve Water Order Remains in Effect

Submitted by Justin Gould on

MAYVILLE, N.Y - The Chautauqua County Health Department, in collaboration with the Village of Fredonia has lifted the boil water order for all Village of Fredonia water customers, including customers within the Town of Pomfret.  Two consecutive days of testing indicate that the water in the distribution system is safe for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, making coffee, etc. The conservation order is still in effect.

The filtration equipment at the water treatment plant is still under stress due to the high levels of organic material in the raw Fredonia Reservoir water.  In recent days, the water treatment plant has been able to produce water that has consistently met NYS Department of Health safety standards.  In order to continue making safe water, the filters will need to maintain a steady backwashing schedule which means more of the clean water that is produced at the plant will need to be used by the plant.

In order to support the need for frequent filter backwashes residents, businesses, and institutions must continue efforts to conserve water by taking the following conservation measures:

  • Turn off the faucet while brushing teeth, shaving, or washing dishes.

  • Only run dishwashers and washing machines with full loads.

  • Take short showers; turn off water while lathering.

  • Skip pre-rinsing dishes; most dishwashers can remove food particles and stains without pre-rinsing.

  • Use disposable plates, cups, and utensils.

  • Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator or microwave — not under running water.

  • Clean vegetables in a bowl of water, not under the tap.

  • Do not wash vehicles.

  • Do not hose down sidewalks, decks, or driveways — use a broom instead.

  • Do not water lawns or landscaping.

  • Do not fill pools, hot tubs, or other large containers.

  • Make every toilet flush count. Don’t use the toilet like a garbage can to flush away tissue, etc.

  • Check for and fix leaks in faucets, toilets, and pipes.
