MAYVILLE, N.Y. – Students at Chautauqua Lake Central School are discovering the power of storytelling, community service, and making a difference through the latest initiative from CHQ Kids Care. This week, the student-driven program introduced CHQ Community UPstanders, a new video series celebrating the everyday heroes who help make Chautauqua County a better place to live.
Hosted within the Chautauqua Lake Central School District, CHQ Kids Care provides students with meaningful opportunities to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences while promoting kindness, leadership, and community involvement.
Built around the inspiring message, "You don't need a cape to make a difference, just a voice!" the new Community UPstanders initiative empowers students to recognize and share the stories of individuals who demonstrate courage, compassion, and a commitment to serving others.
Through student-created videos, interviews, and meaningful conversations, participants are developing valuable communication and storytelling skills while discovering the impact individuals can have on their communities.
First Episode: "The Protectors" Honors Local Fire Departments
The series kicks off with "The Protectors," a special October edition recognizing the dedicated firefighters and local fire departments that work tirelessly to protect Chautauqua County residents.
The video shines a spotlight on the courage, commitment, and selflessness of these everyday heroes, offering students and viewers an opportunity to appreciate the individuals who answer the call when their communities need them most.
Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. "PJ" Wendel, a longtime supporter of the CHQ Kids Care program, applauded the students and school district for bringing these important community stories to life.
"What makes CHQ Kids Care so special is that it gives our young people a voice while teaching them to recognize the good happening all around us," said Wendel. "I commend Chautauqua Lake Central School District for creating opportunities like this, where students can develop valuable skills while building meaningful connections within our communities. This first video is a wonderful tribute to our local firefighters, and I'm proud to help shine a spotlight on the students and the everyday heroes they're recognizing."

Bringing Classroom Learning to Life
The project demonstrates the important role Chautauqua Lake Central School District plays in encouraging innovative educational experiences that extend beyond traditional classroom instruction.
Special recognition goes to educator Logan Betts, whose English Language Arts (ELA) class is helping bring the initiative to life. Through their participation, students are learning how to develop thoughtful questions, conduct interviews, actively listen, and engage in meaningful conversations.
Rather than simply learning about communication and storytelling, students are putting these skills into practice by connecting with community members, documenting their experiences, and sharing their stories with a broader audience.
These hands-on opportunities help students develop confidence, strengthen their voices, and discover how their education can make a meaningful impact beyond the classroom.
Looking Ahead: November Honors "Those Who Serve"
Building on October's recognition of local firefighters, CHQ Community UPstanders is turning its attention to "Those Who Serve" throughout November, with a special focus on honoring military veterans and their contributions to our nation.
As part of the upcoming feature, Chautauqua Lake Central School is seeking individuals who have served in the military and would be willing to share their personal stories and experiences with students.
The initiative offers an opportunity for students to learn firsthand about military service, sacrifice, and dedication while recognizing the men and women who have served our country.
With Veterans Day observed on November 11, the November theme provides a meaningful opportunity to connect students with veterans in their community, preserve personal stories, and deepen their appreciation for those who have served.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Community Leaders
CHQ Community UPstanders is about more than celebrating local heroes. It also encourages young people to recognize their own potential to create positive change.
By highlighting individuals who serve others, stand up for their neighbors, and demonstrate compassion, the series reinforces an important lesson: making a difference does not require extraordinary abilities. Sometimes, it simply begins with speaking up, lending a helping hand, or recognizing someone else's contributions.
The October feature marks the beginning of a year-long journey as CHQ Kids Care continues to share stories celebrating the people who make Chautauqua County stronger.
Thanks to the dedication of Chautauqua Lake Central School District educators and students, CHQ Kids Care continues to demonstrate how student voices can inspire, inform, and unite communities throughout the county.
Community members are encouraged to follow along, watch the student-produced videos, and join in celebrating the everyday UPstanders who inspire the next generation.
