Emergency Assistance

Emergency Assistance is available for individuals and families in urgent need. These programs provide help with housing, utilities, food, and safety when a crisis arises.

What Qualifies as an Emergency

You may be eligible if you are experiencing:

  • Homelessness
  • Little or no food
  • Eviction notice or landlord order to move
  • No fuel for heating during cold weather
  • Utility shut-off or 72-hour disconnect notice
  • Domestic violence or threats of harm by a household member

Types of Assistance Available

Emergency assistance may cover:

  • Shelter arrears (back rent)
  • Utility arrears
  • Fuel costs or fuel delivery
  • Domestic violence shelter costs
  • Temporary housing (hotel/motel) costs

Programs Offered

Depending on your situation, you may qualify for one of the following programs:

  • Emergency Assistance to Adults (EAA) For individuals or couples who receive SSI (Supplemental Security Income) or SSP (State Supplementation Program).
  • Emergency Assistance to Needy Families (EAF) For pregnant women and families with at least one child under 18, or under 19 if attending full-time secondary school.
  • Emergency Safety Net Assistance (ESNA) For single adults and childless couples.

Important Notes

  • You do not need to be eligible for ongoing Temporary Assistance to receive emergency help.

Residents should contact the Chautauqua County Department of Social Services (DSS) for eligibility screening and program enrollment.
