DUNKIRK, NY – Chautauqua County’s Department of Public Facilities (DPF) Division of Solid Waste is inviting residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste during a special collection event on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City of Dunkirk Department of Public Works, 19 Lucas Avenue in Dunkirk.

This free service is open to households only. Commercial businesses are not permitted to participate.

Residents can bring a variety of hazardous household materials for safe disposal, including:

• Used antifreeze
• Fluorescent tube lights
• Flammable adhesives and solvents
• Paint thinner and mineral spirits
• Deck cleaners
• Pool chemicals
• Non-empty aerosol cans
• Herbicides and pesticides
• Chemistry sets and flammable floor polish
• Latex and oil-based paint

“Many common household products contain chemicals that can be harmful to people, pets, and the environment if they are disposed of improperly,” said Aaron Gustafson, Deputy Director of Public Facilities (Environment). “This collection event provides residents with a safe, convenient, and environmentally responsible way to dispose of hazardous materials while helping protect our waterways, land, and communities.”

To participate, residents must complete a registration form listing the materials they plan to drop off. Registration forms are available online at chqgov.com/landfill/hazardous-waste-collection-schedules and will also be available at the event. A complete list of accepted materials is included on the form.

Items not accepted at this event include:

• Batteries

• Motor oil and other waste oils
• Caulk and drywall compound
• Electronics

This collection event is sponsored by Chautauqua County, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Storer’s Container Services, and Chautauqua County Hazmat.
