Code Blue is an emergency initiative activated during periods of extreme cold weather to protect individuals experiencing homelessness from life-threatening conditions. It ensures access to safe, warm shelter for anyone exposed to the dangers of freezing temperatures. In Chautauqua County, Code Blue is a collaborative effort involving local agencies, warming centers, and law enforcement to provide immediate assistance to those in need.
The service 211 WNY offers daily Code Blue alerts for Chautauqua County. Community members can enroll simply by texting CODEBLUECHQ to 898211.
Overnight warming center open on nights when Code Blue is called.
The Overnight Code Blue Warming Center, operated by Recovery Options Made Easy, is located at 917 Washington Street in Jamestown, NY. It is open on Code Blue qualifying nights from November 1 through April 30, 5:30 PM to 7:30 AM. Code Blue is triggered when temperatures reach 32°F or lower, including wind chill, and provides shelter access to anyone in need.
UCAN City Mission also operates an overnight Code Blue Warming Center from 7:00 PM to 8:15 AM. Clients may be referred to this center at 9:00 PM, as long as space is available.
