Pictured above, Hemlock Woolly Adelgid masses from this invasive insect can be seen at the base of the needles on these hemlock branches.
The Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History (RTPI) is partnering with the Chautauqua County Forest Pest Task Force to hold an evening forum to inform the public about invasive forest pests.
The event will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2019 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, 311 Curtis St. in Jamestown, N.Y. It will feature opening remarks from Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello, and representatives from RPTI and the pest task force. There will also be presentations by Mark Whitmore, Forest Entomologist and Professor at Cornell University, and Emily Thiel, Education and Outreach Program Manager for the Western New York Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management. Whitmore will discuss the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, an invasive insect that attacks North American hemlocks, and Thiel will discuss various forest pests and their management.
The forum is free and refreshments will be provided.
